Literary Characters come to life here at BYU-I. I love being an English Major and I will admit that I am a big nerd about it. Once about every semester the English Major society does a thing called "Where's Darcy?" It is our version of "Where's Waldo." We all dress up as literary characters and roam around campus and when someone stops us and guesses who we are we give them a ticket that they can take to the English Department and have a chance to win free books. Today I participated and it was so fun. I was Hermione Granger from Harry Potter.
So I got ready and dressed the part in the morning and became eager to hand out those tickets. To top it all off I had one of the most awkward days of my life. When I was a missionary I was use to getting weird looks from people all the time. . . and people did just that today as well.
One thing that was awesome was in the Smith building. I spend most of my time in that building because that is where the English classes are and in the front foyer they have a international candy stand that a couple guys sale candy and also Harry Potter butter beer. As I was standing in the foyer waiting to go up to one of my classes the guys at the candy stand kept staring at me and smiling. . . finally, one of them approached me and said, "Would you like to by some Harry Potter butter beer?" I did have a dollar in my bag and so I said that I would love to. So as a result playing Hermione I got to enjoy a cup of warm butter beer.
Unfortunately that is not where the conversation ended. They guy continued on saying how cool it is that I am wearing a tie and that girls should wear ties more often because he thought it was pretty attractive.
If I could only count on one hand on how many guys throughout the day glanced my way in a checking out manner and some even approached me with a piece of paper with there phone numbers on them. One guy actually asked me out on a date and many guys mentioned how good looking the tie on me was. Yes, it was an awkward day playing Hermione Granger. To top it all off though, I was sitting in the library at one point of the day and working on an assignment and so I took my sweater and scarf off and I was just wearing the white shirt, the skirt, and the tie, and the stockings when this guy walked past and then back tracked and looked over at me and with no hesitation said, "Wow, if I had an office I would be hiring you as my secretary." hmm. . . how do you even respond to that?
I am glad that today is over. . . and Hermione Granger is in my past now. So Where's Darcy was a fun activity and I hope every one that received tickets will win something. . .and if any one is interested in calling up some guys, I've got lots of numbers.
